The Roman Symbols
Romans Numerals are based on the following symbols:There are rules to forming numbers, they are as follows; A symbol is added when a symbol appears after a larger (or equal) one. For example: XI = X + I = 10 + 1 = 11 Another example: CXX = C + X + X = 100 + 10 + 10 = 120 On the other hand, if the symbol appears before a larger symbol it is subtracted e.g. IX = X − I = 10 − 1 = 9 XL = L − X = 50 − 10 = 40 Note: Avoid using the same symbol more than three times in a row. How to Convert to Roman Numerals To do this, the numbers must be broken into Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones, and written down each in turn to make it easy. e.g Convert 158 to Roman Numerals. You will break 158 into 100, 50, and 8 before converting each of them • 100 = C • 50 = L • 8 = VIII Adding the numbers 100 + 50 + 8 = 158, so 158 = CLVIII
