3rd grade math worksheets - at this time most students are of age 8 to 9, and have mastered the most basic math skills. Third grade is the time for more complex math problems, and here kids move from mastering basics to learning new and more complex matters. There is no doubt that mathematics is a vast and deep field, which requires a lot of understanding; and in order to understand any concept better we have to be able to solve it. Which is why we have designed various worksheets for students of the 3rd grade, keeping in mind their level of understanding; and how far they have come. Worksheets are an interactive and fun way to boost independent learning, and at this stage in their life; students should be pushed towards independent learning. With the help of our worksheets you will be able to cover all the basics and advance (according to their level) concepts. As they will be a proof that all your kids concepts are in fact clear. Worksheets are not just a great way to learn, they are a great way to revise your skills and knowledge. Keep in mind, the worksheets we are providing you with are not a test for your child, these are a fun activity to do; which enables them to learn, revise, and polish them mathematical skills. These worksheets were specially designed to to ensure that students are having fun, it is a fun task; that give the intention of working on something fun, rather than plain old school work. As our worksheets will be covering the same curriculum taught in schools, they will help kids develop and polish skills they are being taught. The main aim of these worksheets is to offer children a fun task, which will help them learn, revise, and polish their math skill.
Grade three math activites are structured around slightly advanced math topics than those children saw in the previous grades. We have made reviewing maths for class 3 easy since there is an answer key attached to each of the worksheets in this page. All you need is a printer to start making your own collection of tests. Our worksheets are free and you are allowed to share them in your forums. We appreciate sharing these resources to other teachers and parents who may be in need. We are constantily upgrading this secrion based on the grade 3 mathematics curriculum. Remember to come back for more.
Math is a fun subject especially when students have a solid foundation. It is important to build this foundation in our kids if we hope that they will succeed in future. Consistent with this mindset, kindergarten right up to 2nd grade focuses on essential math skills which tend to include all the operations studied in grade three. However in grade three, we tend to switch things up a little bit. For example, in lower levels, children are taught addition of smaller numbers up to two digits. In the 3rd grade, children get to learn addition of large numbers requiring them to carry numbers across places in some instances. They also learn word problems in which they decode addition problems from explanations or short stories in a text. This approach is an initiation to logic and critical thinking which children get exposed to as they advance to higher levels. Another topic that gets more attention in grade 3 is division which was introduced in the earlier grade. Division can go from dividing small numbers with the help of pictures right up to dividing large numbers that require you to use a long division method. The challenge with this method comes in when the first digit in a two or longer digit number is not divisible by the denominator. In such cases students have to borrow from the next number. There is also the problem of remainders in long division which children will also encounter. Like the example of addition, students will solve division word problems and eventually apply some logical skills in coming up with the operations from division stories. Something that tends to occur a lot at this level is the mixing of more than one operation in word problems to find the solution to a problem. This topic in itself is called mixed operations. Solving problems under this topic requires some understanding of BODMAS or PEMDAS, the former being an acronym for brackets, of, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction. What this translates to is the fact that to solve problems with mixed operations, we have to follow that order else the answers will be incorrect. If you want to know this, try solving some mixed operations exercises here in any order. Another topic that gets a lot of attention is multiplication; in it, children learn how to multiply numbers and also use multiplication tables as a means to solve problems without really thinking about the steps. This is because multiplying some numbers goes with simple rules, for example, multiplying any number by ten is simply writing that number and adding zero after it. The same will apply for 100, 1000, 10000, etc. All you do is write the number and add zeros to it to get the product, hence 1000 x 8 = 8,000. Anyone who understands these rules will easily solve multiplication exercises of this nature.
Third grade is also a class where students get to learn to solve algebra problems. What makes algebra special is the fact that children get to solve problems with the usual operations but the difference is that in some cases they are dealing with numbers being added to letters, or multiplication and division including the mix of letters and numbers. In some cases children are asked to find the value of the letter in the equation. In other instances they may be asked to find the answer of a problem considering that the given variable has a specific value. Algebraic expressions will be taken further as children increase levels to include linear equations, quadratic equations and more. Children will also cover the usual topics of grade three like even and odd numbers, prime and composite numbers, shapes and geometry, perimeters and areas, word problems and more. If you are interested in any of the worksheets above, simply click on the print button to view the larger file. Print it out and in case there is an answer key, store it away from students and use it as a reference point. Each sheet is a free pdf test sheet with an answer key. Hence, the first section is for your students / class while the second part is for the teacher or parent which needs to cross check if students got it right.
The 3rd grade is a key period in your child’s elementary school math education. During this year, they will focus a lot of their time into becoming efficient with their multiplication skills. In the process, they will also be increasing their mastery over all four arithmetic operations. Once they have secured these skills, they will also learn how to manipulate fractions with them.
Don’t hesitate to download our 3rd grade math worksheets on this page to serve as a learning aid for your students. Each worksheet is designed to give your students ample practice and experience with their year’s math problems. The questions on our sheet can vary in difficulty to prod your learner’s math abilities and keep them mentally stimulated.
It is essential for your child to secure a solid foundation over the first two operations of arithmetic – both addition and subtraction. In the 3rd grade, they’ll be handling add-or-subtract operations of up to three or four digits. They’ll be encountering the latter half – multiplication and division – early on, and questions will typically involve numbers of up to two digits.
Parents and teachers often employ the multiplication table to help a child solve common times problems. The table teaches that a numbers’ multiples can take on certain patterns that they can memorize to solve problems mentally, reducing the time they need to finish tests or exams. Kids can learn the times table one column at a time, internalizing it gradually.
Once a child becomes acquainted with the concepts of multiplication and division, the third grade provides an excellent opportunity to integrate both their arithmetic and geometry lessons through the introduction of areas, perimeters, and circumferences. Finding areas and circumferences, after all, require the use of multiplication. On a related note, your child will be getting practice with familiarizing the value of pi for area problems involving circles.
Of course, geometry during this year will also introduce the far easier concept of finding a shape’s perimeter.
Your child’s problem solving acumen will be sharpened this year with more comparison problems. They will be tasked with identifying and comparing the values between unit or number fractions.
In terms of practical skills, the 3rd grade will test the child with math problems that include units of measurement for different quantities. They’ll learn the common prefixes for differing units, such as grams, meters, and liters. Eventually, they’ll also practice understanding raw data and interpret them into statistics represented through various charts, including the bar graph and pie graph.
By the time your learner enters the 3rd grade, they can already be quite adept with performing some math operations mentally. You might even be pleasantly surprised at how promptly they can solve multiplication or division problems in their head before the academic year ends.
